1. Supreme Court asks Centre to review NEET-SS cut-off decision
The Supreme Court asked the Union government to reconsider its decision not to reduce the qualifying percentile for NEET-SS, noting that vacant super-speciality medical seats present a compelling case for relaxation. The dispute arose because many seats remained unfilled even though eligible candidates, including doctors serving compulsory rural postings, were available. Tamil Nadu also raised concerns over the premature diversion of seats earmarked for in-service government doctors. The Court observed that allowing scarce super-speciality seats to remain vacant serves neither medical education nor public health, particularly when India needs trained specialists. The underlying logic is that eligibility standards protect academic quality, but rigid cut-offs should not become counterproductive when substantial capacity remains unused. Any relaxation must nevertheless be transparent, uniformly applied and consistent with merit. The case highlights the need for admission policies that reconcile quality, equity, efficient utilisation of medical seats and public-health requirements, rather than treating qualifying percentiles as inflexible ends in themselves.
