1. Centre prescribes labels for all photorealistic AI content online

The Union government has amended the IT Rules to mandate that all “photorealistic” AI-generated images and videos online must carry clear labels disclosing that they are synthetic. Platforms are warned that repeated non-compliance can lead to loss of safe-harbour protection. The rules also sharply reduce the time within which social media companies must act on complaints about illegal or highly sensitive content, especially non-consensual intimate images. The logic behind the move is the rapid spread of deepfakes that can damage reputations, influence elections and incite violence before fact-checking catches up.
