1. Netanyahu rejects Trump’s Gaza proposal
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza proposal in its existing form, insisting that Israeli forces will not withdraw until Hamas is “genuinely disarmed”. The proposal envisages Hamas surrendering weapons to a transitional Palestinian governing body while Israel begins withdrawing forces, but Netanyahu argues that withdrawal without verified disarmament could permit Hamas to regroup. Hamas, meanwhile, remains committed to the proposal but wants American mediators to pressure Israel and has sought guarantees against renewed Israeli military action. Netanyahu’s disagreement with Washington is significant because the United States remains Israel’s principal strategic partner. The dispute illustrates the central obstacle in Gaza diplomacy: sequencing security guarantees, disarmament, Israeli withdrawal and Palestinian governance. A durable settlement requires enforceable commitments rather than unilateral assurances. The immediate humanitarian and political logic favours a negotiated framework combining cessation of hostilities, credible security arrangements, reconstruction and legitimate Palestinian administration while preventing renewed cycles of armed confrontation.
2. More than 1.5 crore names removed during Special Intensive Revision
More than 1.5 crore names have reportedly been deleted from electoral rolls during the latest phase of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR), currently covering 16 States and three Union Territories. The scale varies considerably: Andhra Pradesh recorded about 44.89 lakh deletions, while several other States and Union Territories reported significant exclusions. Electoral-roll revision is necessary to remove duplicate entries, deceased voters, migrants and persons otherwise ineligible to remain enrolled. However, mass deletion also creates the possibility of genuine voters being inadvertently disenfranchised. The constitutional logic must therefore combine electoral integrity with universal adult franchise. The Election Commission should provide clear reasons for deletion, adequate notice, transparent data and accessible mechanisms for claims and appeals. Documentary requirements must not become unreasonable barriers for poor, migrant or vulnerable citizens. Political controversy surrounding SIR can best be addressed through verifiable procedures and public scrutiny. Clean electoral rolls strengthen democracy only when accuracy is achieved without unjustly excluding eligible citizens.
