1. SIR Controversy Intensifies as INDIA Bloc Marches Against Election Commission
The Opposition’s confrontation with the Election Commission intensified as INDIA bloc MPs marched towards the ECI headquarters demanding suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), restoration of allegedly deleted names and removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi described the exercise as “treason” and accused the government of using electoral-roll revision to influence elections. Several MPs were detained after the march was stopped. These are political allegations, not established findings of electoral manipulation. The ECI has defended SIR as an exercise intended to maintain accurate electoral rolls. The constitutional challenge is to reconcile Article 324, which gives the ECI supervisory authority, with Article 326’s commitment to universal adult suffrage. Gist: electoral-roll purification and voter inclusion are complementary, not competing, goals. Credibility requires transparent criteria, individual notice, auditable deletions, accessible appeals and institutional decisions capable of independent scrutiny.
2. Centre Proposes Five-Pronged GST Reforms — Moving Towards Simpler Compliance
The Centre is set to place a five-pronged administrative reform package before the GST Council, aimed at reducing compliance burdens and improving the ease of doing business. The proposals focus on process reforms, structural reforms, ease of living and doing business, export services and e-commerce. Among the measures reported are automated or simplified procedures, easier refunds, relief for small taxpayers and exporters, and reduced paperwork. The logic is important: GST reform is no longer merely about adjusting tax rates; administrative efficiency now determines how businesses experience the tax system. Complicated filing, delayed refunds and uncertainty raise working-capital costs, particularly for MSMEs and exporters. The GST Council represents cooperative fiscal federalism because both the Union and States participate in decision-making. Gist: GST 2.0 should focus on simplicity, predictability and technology-assisted compliance. A good tax system must raise adequate revenue while minimising transaction costs, disputes and unnecessary administrative friction.
