1. SC Orders CBI Crackdown on ‘Digital Arrest’ Scams
The Supreme Court delivered a decisive intervention by handing the CBI a “free hand” to investigate the exploding menace of ‘digital arrest’ scams, which have defrauded citizens—particularly the elderly—of nearly ₹3,000 crore. The court acknowledged the cross-border nature of these crimes and took the extraordinary step of overriding state consent to enable a pan-India CBI probe. The directive expands investigation to fraudulent investments and part-time job scams in subsequent stages. The Bench criticised telecom operators for lax issuance of SIM cards and directed States to operationalise cybercrime coordination centres linked to I4C. Noting the global footprint of cybercriminal havens, the court asked CBI to work with Interpol and sought RBI’s response on using AI/ML to track money-laundering “layering”. The ruling reflects judicial concern over rising technology-driven crime and the need for centralised expertise for fast, coordinated, nationwide cyber-fraud investigation.
