1. SC Orders CBI Crackdown on ‘Digital Arrest’ Scams
The Supreme Court delivered a decisive intervention by handing the CBI a “free hand” to investigate the exploding menace of ‘digital arrest’ scams, which have defrauded citizens—particularly the elderly—of nearly ₹3,000 crore. The court acknowledged the cross-border nature of these crimes and took the extraordinary step of overriding state consent to enable a pan-India CBI probe. The directive expands investigation to fraudulent investments and part-time job scams in subsequent stages.
