18 अप्रैल के अंक की सबसे बड़ी राजनीतिक घटना महिला आरक्षण और परिसीमन से जुड़े विधेयक का लोकसभा में पारित न हो पाना रही। सत्ता पक्ष ने विपक्ष पर महिलाओं के अधिकारों के रास्ते में रोड़ा बनने का आरोप लगाया, जबकि विपक्ष ने इसे संविधान और संघीय संतुलन पर “हमला” बताते हुए अपनी जीत बताया। इसका तर्क यह है कि मुद्दा केवल महिलाओं को 33% आरक्षण देने का नहीं रह गया था; इसके साथ लोकसभा सीटों की संख्या, परिसीमन और राज्यों के प्रतिनिधित्व का प्रश्न जुड़ गया। इसलिए यह बहस सामाजिक न्याय बनाम राजनीतिक गणित के संघर्ष में बदल गई।दृष्टिकोण यह है कि महिला प्रतिनिधित्व बढ़ाना आवश्यक है, लेकिन यदि उसे व्यापक संवैधानिक पुनर्संरचना के साथ जोड़ा जाएगा तो राजनीतिक अविश्वास बढ़ना स्वाभाविक है।सार यह है कि महिलाओं के आरक्षण पर सिद्धांततः समर्थन होने के बावजूद प्रक्रिया, समय और राजनीतिक उद्देश्य को लेकर गहरी असहमति ने विधेयक को रोक दिया।
