1. IAF Officer Arrested in Alleged Pakistan-Linked Espionage Network

An Indian Air Force Wing Commander was arrested under the Official Secrets Act for allegedly sharing sensitive defence information after falling prey to an online “honey trap” reportedly operated by Pakistan-based handlers. Investigators allege that the officer shared information concerning troop movement and deployment and was later persuaded to install data-stealing software on a colleague’s phone, potentially enabling remote access to strategic military information. The case underlines the transformation of espionage from traditional human intelligence operations to digitally enabled psychological and cyber operations. Personal vulnerability, social-media contact, malware and remote-access tools can now become vectors for compromising national security. The institutional logic must therefore extend beyond physical secrecy to continuous cyber hygiene, counter-intelligence training, behavioural risk detection and device security among defence personnel.
