1. Jaishankar in Ukraine: Russian Oil Purchases and India’s Strategic Autonomy
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, on his first dedicated bilateral visit to Ukraine, defended India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, arguing that stopping such imports would not by itself end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He reiterated that the war can ultimately be resolved only through dialogue, diplomacy and negotiations, while offering India’s assistance in any viable peace effort. Jaishankar also highlighted India’s responsibility to ensure affordable energy supplies for 1.4 billion people and asked that New Delhi’s energy-security compulsions be respected. Discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also covered Black Sea shipping, global food security, Indian seafarer casualties and future cooperation in pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, AI and digitalisation. The logic reflects India’s multi-alignment: it maintains close relations with Moscow while deepening engagement with Kyiv. The gist is that strategic autonomy allows India to pursue energy security without abandoning its diplomatic advocacy of an end to war.
