1. Government Unveils Roadmap to Revive Underperforming Tiger Reserves
The Union Government released a new roadmap to strengthen tiger conservation by focusing on reserves with critically low tiger populations rather than merely celebrating overall population growth. While India's tiger population has increased from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022, nearly one-third of all tigers are concentrated in only a handful of reserves, leaving several protected areas with very few or no breeding tigers. The strategy proposes habitat restoration, prey-base improvement, better forest connectivity and tiger reintroductions where necessary. The logic is that long-term conservation depends on maintaining genetically connected populations instead of isolated pockets of success. The editorial stand argues that conservation must move from quantity to ecological quality by addressing habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict. The gist is that sustainable tiger conservation requires balanced landscapes, scientific management and community participation rather than relying solely on increasing national population figures.
