1. National Real-Time Portal for Organ Transplants

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has launched a real-time portal and mobile application to create a unified nationwide waiting list for organ transplants. The system will track recipients, enable hospitals to raise “super urgent” requests, facilitate interstate allocation and nationally match swap donors. In 2025, India recorded 20,138 organ transplants, including 14,477 kidney and 5,154 liver transplants, but only 3,526 involved deceased donors compared with 16,612 living-donor transplants. The logic behind the platform is to reduce fragmentation caused by different hospital and state-level systems and make allocation more transparent. Aadhaar-linked organ pledges are also intended to record donor wishes clearly. However, states still follow different allocation criteria, making harmonisation a key challenge. The overall stand is strongly reformist: technology can improve fairness and utilisation, but long-term success depends on common allocation norms, stronger deceased-donation awareness, ethical safeguards and reliable outcome monitoring.
