1. NFHS-6: sharp rise in obesity and diabetes
The latest National Family Health Survey-6 shows a sharp rise in obesity and high blood sugar among Indians between 2019 and 2024. The proportion of overweight or obese women aged 15–49 rose from 24% to 30.7%, while for men it increased from 22.9% to 27.3%. Urban obesity remains much higher, with 42.8% of urban women and 36.3% of urban men overweight or obese. High blood sugar has also risen: 20.9% of men and 17.8% of women aged 15 and above reported high or very high blood sugar or were on medication. The logic is that lifestyle change, urban diets, reduced physical activity and metabolic risks are reshaping India’s disease burden. The gist is that India’s health challenge is moving from infectious diseases alone to chronic non-communicable diseases requiring prevention, screening, diet reform and primary-care strengthening.
