1. India-US strategic alliance and Rubio’s outreach
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India-US ties as a “strategic alliance” between two countries with global influence, seeking to reassure New Delhi after a difficult year marked by visa curbs, trade tensions, deportations and Washington’s tactical engagement with Pakistan. In talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Rubio said US immigration changes were global and not India-specific, though he accepted that India could be disproportionately affected because of its large skilled workforce in America. Jaishankar emphasised that legal mobility should not suffer while both sides cooperate against illegal migration. The logic of Rubio’s outreach is to prevent recent frictions from weakening strategic convergence in defence, energy, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, trade and the Indo-Pacific. The gist is that India-US relations remain strong, but trust now depends on managing migration, trade and Pakistan-related sensitivities.
