1. AI Crash: Probe Looks for Vital Clues of Electric Malfunction in Tail Wreckage
Investigators probing the tragic June 12 Air India AI-171 crash, which killed 260 people, are focusing on a potential electric malfunction in the aircraft’s tail section. The empennage, or tail assembly, showed signs of a contained electric fire, raising questions about whether the malfunction began pre-takeoff. A prior snag involving the stabilizer position transducer had been noted in the technical log. While the forward black box yielded valuable data, the rear black box was severely damaged and unreadable. The Auxiliary Power Unit, however, was found intact and is under scrutiny.
