1. Opposition March to Supreme Court — Separation of Powers and Constitutional Accountability
On 12 October 2026, several Opposition parties marched towards the Supreme Court in Delhi, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raising objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Senior leaders filed a joint petition seeking judicial intervention. Earlier, Chief Justice Surya Kant had declined their request for an administrative meeting, explaining that matters already pending before the Court must be addressed through judicial proceedings rather than informal discussions. He emphasised that separation of powers forms part of the Constitution's basic structure. Logic: Constitutional institutions must remain accountable without compromising judicial independence or due process. Article 32 enables citizens to approach the Supreme Court for enforcement of fundamental rights. Stand: Electoral disputes should be resolved through transparent procedures, reasoned institutional responses and independent judicial scrutiny. Gist: Democracy requires both the right to challenge public authorities and respect for the constitutional procedures governing institutional accountability.
