1. Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister
Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal after the party’s landmark Assembly victory, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule. The swearing-in at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and NDA Chief Ministers, signalling the political importance of Bengal in BJP’s national strategy. Adhikari declared that he would serve “everyone” and attempted to soften his earlier polarising rhetoric after defeating Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and retaining Nandigram. His Cabinet balanced caste, tribal and regional representation by including Rajbanshi, Matua and Adivasi leaders. The logic behind this composition is to consolidate BJP’s social coalition in Bengal. The editorial stand suggests that the BJP now faces the real challenge of governance after years of opposition politics. The gist is that Bengal has entered a new political era with ideological and administrative transition at its core.
