1. Fertiliser subsidy burden and global supply crunch
India’s fertiliser subsidy burden is expected to almost double to about Rs 3.4 lakh crore, against the Budget estimate of Rs 1.7 lakh crore, because global fertiliser prices have surged amid the West Asia crisis and supply constraints. Officials said fertilisers are still being sold to farmers at a subsidised price of around Rs 300 per sack, even though the cost has risen from about Rs 2,900 after Covid to nearly Rs 4,500. China and other suppliers are reportedly holding back stocks, while India is looking to Russia for additional imports. The logic is food-security protection: fertiliser prices cannot be passed fully to farmers without affecting cultivation and inflation. The gist is that India’s fiscal stability, farm support and external vulnerability are now closely tied to fertiliser imports, currency pressure and geopolitical disruption.
