1. Jharkhand Government Cancels Three Recruitment Exams after Student Protest
After 16 days of protests, the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three recruitment examinations, including the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services preliminary examination, following six hours of negotiations with student groups. Three members of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission also resigned. The government accepted demands for CID investigation into criminal aspects of alleged irregularities and Enforcement Directorate scrutiny of financial dimensions, while promising fast-track courts and reports within 90 days. Protesters, however, continued to demand cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and a CBI probe into all suspicious JPSC examinations. The government argued that the CGL results cannot be cancelled arbitrarily because the process was monitored by the Supreme Court and High Court and candidates have already joined service. The broader logic is that public recruitment must combine fairness with legal certainty. The gist is that examination reform requires independent investigation, transparent testing agencies, institutional accountability and timely resolution before administrative failures destroy candidates’ careers and public trust.
