The Moon does not actually change its shape. It is always a nearly spherical object. What changes is the portion of the Moon’s sunlit surface visible from Earth. As the Moon revolves around Earth, the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon continuously change. This causes different amounts of the illuminated half of the Moon to be visible to observers on Earth. These changing appearances are known as the phases of the Moon. The cycle repeats regularly and creates the impression that the Moon is growing, shrinking, or changing shape, although its actual form remains unchanged.
