TYPES OF RAINFALL
1. Convectional Rainfall
Convectional rainfall occurs when the Sun strongly heats the Earth's surface, causing the air above it to become warm and rise. As the warm air rises, it expands and cools. The water vapor present in the air condenses into clouds, and when the droplets become heavy, rainfall occurs. This type of rainfall is usually intense but short-lived and is often accompanied by thunderstorms. Convectional rainfall is common in equatorial and tropical regions where temperatures are high throughout the year. It plays an important role in maintaining the lush vegetation and biodiversity of tropical rainforests around the world.
2. Orographic Rainfall
Orographic rainfall, also known as relief rainfall, occurs when moist winds are forced to rise over mountains or highlands. As the air ascends the windward side of the mountain, it cools and condenses, forming clouds and producing rainfall. The side facing the wind receives heavy rainfall, while the leeward side remains relatively dry, creating a rain-shadow region. This type of rainfall is common in mountainous areas such as the Western Ghats in India. Orographic rainfall significantly influences local climate, vegetation, agriculture, and water resources. It is an important factor in shaping ecosystems and regional weather patterns.
3. Cyclonic Rainfall
Cyclonic rainfall occurs when
