SHIFTING CULTIVATION
1. What is Shifting Cultivation?
Shifting cultivation is a traditional farming practice in which farmers clear a small patch of forest by cutting and burning vegetation. The land is cultivated for one to three years until the soil loses its fertility. Farmers then move to a new plot, leaving the old land uncultivated for several years so it can naturally regain its fertility. This method is mainly practiced in tropical forest regions by tribal and indigenous communities. It requires simple tools and little investment. Shifting cultivation is also known as slash-and-burn agriculture and has been practiced for centuries as a subsistence farming system.
2. Where is Shifting Cultivation Practised?
Shifting cultivation is mainly practiced in tropical and subtropical regions where dense forests and abundant rainfall support natural vegetation. It is common in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In India, it is widely practiced in the North-Eastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura. Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, Madagascar, and Tanzania also practice this farming method under different local names. Although modern agriculture is replacing it in many areas, it remains important for tribal livelihoods.
3. Names of Shifting Cultivation in Different Countries
Shifting cultivation is known by different local names across the world. In India, it is called Jhum, while in Sri Lanka, it is known as Chena. In Indonesia and Malaysia, it is called Ladang. The Philippines calls it Kaingin, Thailand uses Tamrai, Vietnam calls it Ray, and Myanmar refers to it as Taungya. In Africa, it is known as Bush Fallow, Matabi, Ngasou, and Tavy. In Latin America, local names include Milpa, Roça, Conuco, Roza, and Chakra, reflecting regional farming traditions.
4. Cycle of Shifting Cultivation
Shifting cultivation follows a repeated cycle. First, farmers clear the vegetation by cutting trees and shrubs. Next, the dried vegetation is burned, producing ash that temporarily enriches the soil. Crops are then cultivated for one to three years until soil fertility declines. After harvesting for a few seasons, the land is left fallow for several years, allowing forests and soil nutrients to recover naturally. Finally, farmers move to a new plot and repeat the process. This cycle helps maintain productivity when population pressure is low and sufficient fallow periods are available.
5. Key Features of Shifting Cultivation
Shifting cultivation has several unique characteristics. It uses the slash-and-burn method to prepare agricultural land. Crops are grown for only one to three years, after which the soil quickly loses fertility. The abandoned land is left fallow for a long period to restore nutrients naturally. This farming system is mainly found in tropical forest regions with heavy rainfall. It relies on simple tools, family labour, and traditional knowledge rather than modern machinery. Shifting cultivation is primarily practiced for subsistence farming, where farmers produce food mainly for their own families rather than for commercial markets.
6. Advantages of Shifting Cultivation
Shifting cultivation offers several benefits, especially for tribal and rural communities. It requires low investment, simple tools, and minimal technology, making it affordable for small farmers. The ash produced by burning vegetation temporarily enriches the soil with nutrients, supporting crop growth. Long fallow periods allow forests and soil fertility to recover naturally. The system helps maintain traditional lifestyles, cultural practices, and local knowledge of farming. It also provides food security in remote regions where modern farming methods are difficult to adopt. When practiced sustainably with long fallow periods, it can coexist with the natural environment.
7. Disadvantages of Shifting Cultivation
Despite its advantages, shifting cultivation has several drawbacks. Large-scale clearing and burning of forests cause deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and destruction of wildlife habitats. Burning releases smoke and greenhouse gases, contributing to air pollution and climate change. Soil erosion increases after vegetation is removed, leading to nutrient loss and declining productivity. As population pressure grows, fallow periods become shorter, preventing forests and soils from fully recovering. This results in land degradation and reduced agricultural yields. Because of these environmental impacts, many governments encourage sustainable farming methods as alternatives to shifting cultivation.
8. A Balance is Needed
Shifting cultivation can be sustainable when practiced responsibly with long fallow periods and proper forest management. Indigenous communities have traditionally used this system without causing significant environmental damage because they cultivated small areas and allowed forests enough time to regenerate. However, increasing population, shrinking forest areas, and growing food demand have reduced fallow periods, making the practice less sustainable. Therefore, a balance between traditional knowledge and modern conservation methods is essential. Governments can promote agroforestry, improved farming techniques, and community-based forest management to protect the environment while supporting the livelihoods and cultural traditions of tribal communities.
