Introduction
The Constitution of India is one of the greatest political and legal documents ever produced in the modern world. It is not merely a legal framework but a social, political, and economic charter designed to transform a deeply diverse society into a modern democratic republic. Adopted on 26 November 1949 and enforced on 26 January 1950, the Constitution reflects the aspirations of the freedom struggle, the wisdom of the Constituent Assembly, and the commitment of India to democracy, justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar described the Constitution as a vehicle of social revolution. It established democratic governance, protected individual freedoms, promoted social justice, and created institutions capable of maintaining constitutional government in a vast and diverse country.
The Constitution contains several distinctive features that collectively define the Indian constitutional system. These features have evolved through judicial interpretation, constitutional amendments, and political practice over the past seven decades.
