RED RIVER

1. Red River – Introduction

The Red River, also known as the Hong River, is one of the most important rivers in East Asia. It originates in Yunnan Province, China, flows through northern Vietnam, and empties into the Gulf of Tonkin. The river is about 1,149 kilometres long and is regarded as the lifeline of northern Vietnam. It supports agriculture, transportation, fisheries, and millions of people living in its basin. The river carries a large amount of reddish silt, which gives it the name “Red River.” It has played a significant role in the historical, cultural, and economic development of Vietnam.

The Red River rises in the Ailao Mountains of Yunnan Province, China, and flows southeast into Vietnam before draining into the Gulf of Tonkin. It is approximately 1,149 kilometres long and has a fertile basin that supports dense populations. The river is famous for carrying iron-rich red sediments, which enrich agricultural lands and give the river its distinctive colour. The Red River Delta is one of Vietnam's most productive farming regions. It is also an important source of irrigation, drinking water, fisheries, hydroelectric power, and inland navigation, making it essential for the country's economy.

The Red River is often called the "Lifeline of Northern Vietnam" because of its immense importance to agriculture and human settlement. It flows through mountainous regions before entering fertile plains, where it forms the highly productive Red River Delta. The river transports nutrient-rich alluvial soil that supports rice cultivation and other crops. Several dams and hydroelectric projects have been constructed along the river to control floods and generate electricity. The basin experiences seasonal flooding during the monsoon, making flood management an important priority. The river also supports rich biodiversity and serves as a major inland waterway.
