PORTS ON THE WESTERN COAST
1. Deendayal Port (Kandla), Gujarat
Deendayal Port, formerly known as Kandla Port, is located in the state of Gujarat on the Gulf of Kutch. It is India's largest tidal port, where water levels rise and fall significantly due to ocean tides. Established in 1950 after the partition of India, the port became an important gateway for international trade. It handles petroleum products, fertilizers, food grains, coal, salt, chemicals, and container cargo. The port plays a crucial role in connecting India's western region with global markets. Its strategic location and modern infrastructure make it one of India's busiest and most economically significant ports.
2. Mumbai Port, Maharashtra
Mumbai Port, situated in Maharashtra, is India's largest natural harbour port. Located on the Arabian Sea, it has served as a major maritime gateway since the colonial period. The natural harbour provides safe anchorage for ships throughout the year, reducing the need for extensive artificial protection. Mumbai Port handles petroleum products, chemicals, automobiles, general cargo, and passenger traffic. It played a vital role in the development of Mumbai as India's financial and commercial capital. Although container traffic has shifted largely to JNPA, Mumbai Port continues to remain one of the country's most important ports for trade and maritime activities.
3. Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA), Maharashtra
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), also called Nhava Sheva Port, is located in Maharashtra near Mumbai. It is India's largest container port and the country's premier artificial harbour. Commissioned in 1989, JNPA handles more than half of India's containerized cargo. The port is equipped with modern container terminals, automated systems, and excellent road and rail connectivity. It plays a vital role in India's international trade by facilitating exports and imports of manufactured goods. JNPA is a key component of India's logistics network and contributes significantly to the country's economic growth and global competitiveness.
4. Mormugao Port, Goa
Mormugao Port is located in the state of Goa on India's western coast. It is one of the country's oldest and most important ports, especially known for the export of iron ore. The port has a naturally sheltered harbour, allowing ships to operate efficiently throughout the year. Besides iron ore, it also handles coal, petroleum products, fertilizers, and general cargo. Mormugao Port supports Goa's economy by promoting international trade and industrial development. Its strategic location on the Arabian Sea makes it an important gateway for exports from western and central India.

Kolkata Port and Haldia Port, located in West Bengal, are India's major riverine ports, situated along the Hooghly River. These ports handle coal, petroleum products, iron ore, fertilizers, food grains, and container cargo. 6. Paradip Port, Odisha
Paradip Port, located in Odisha, is one of India's leading major ports on the eastern coast. It is especially important for the export of iron ore, coal, and other bulk cargo. Commissioned in 1966, the port has developed into a major hub for mineral exports from eastern and central India. It also handles petroleum products, fertilizers, thermal coal, and containers. Paradip Port has deep-draft facilities capable of accommodating large cargo vessels. Its strategic location on the Bay of Bengal and excellent connectivity make it a significant contributor to India's international trade and industrial growth.
7. Visakhapatnam Port, Andhra Pradesh
Visakhapatnam Port, located in Andhra Pradesh, is India's deepest landlocked natural harbour and one of the busiest ports on the eastern coast. Situated along the Bay of Bengal, it handles iron ore, petroleum products, coal, fertilizers, steel, containers, and general cargo. The port is protected by natural hills, making it one of the safest natural harbours in India. It also serves the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command, adding strategic importance. Excellent rail and road connectivity enable efficient transportation of goods. Visakhapatnam Port is a major contributor to India's maritime trade and economic development.
8. Chennai Port, Tamil Nadu
Chennai Port, located in Tamil Nadu, is India's oldest artificial harbour and one of the oldest operating ports in the country. Established in 1881, it serves as an important gateway for trade in southern India. The port handles automobiles, containers, petroleum products, machinery, fertilizers, and general cargo. Chennai Port is especially famous for automobile exports, earning the city the nickname "Detroit of India." Its advanced infrastructure, container terminals, and strong connectivity with road and rail networks make it one of India's busiest ports. It plays a significant role in supporting manufacturing, exports, and economic growth.
