OCEAN FLOOR RELIEF FEATURES
1. Continental Shelf
The continental shelf is the shallow, gently sloping submerged extension of a continent beneath the ocean. It begins at the coastline and extends to the shelf break, where the ocean floor starts descending steeply. Continental shelves are usually less than 200 meters deep and are rich in marine life because sunlight can penetrate the water easily. They are important for fishing, offshore oil and natural gas extraction, and marine biodiversity. Many of the world's most productive fishing grounds are found on continental shelves. These regions also serve as important zones for transportation, resource exploration, and coastal economic activities.
2. Continental Slope
The continental slope is the steep section of the ocean floor that connects the continental shelf to the deep ocean basin. It marks the true edge of the continent and descends rapidly to great depths. The slope is formed by tectonic activity, sediment movement, and erosion. Submarine canyons are often found cutting through continental slopes. These canyons transport sediments from the continent to deeper ocean regions. The continental slope is an important transition zone between shallow coastal waters and the deep ocean floor. It plays a significant role in ocean circulation, sediment deposition, and marine geological processes.
