MEKONG RIVER

1. Mekong River – Introduction

The Mekong River is one of the most important rivers in Southeast Asia and is often called the "Lifeline of Southeast Asia." It originates on the Tibetan Plateau in China and flows through six countries before emptying into the South China Sea. The river is essential for agriculture, fisheries, hydroelectric power, transportation, and tourism. Millions of people depend on the Mekong for their livelihood, making it one of the world's most economically and ecologically significant rivers. Its fertile floodplains and rich biodiversity have supported civilizations and cultures in Southeast Asia for centuries.

2. Geographical Features of the Mekong River

The Mekong River originates near the Tanggula Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai Province, China. It flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam before draining into the South China Sea. The river is approximately 4,350 kilometres long and has a drainage basin covering about 810,000 square kilometres, making it one of the world's largest river basins. It generally flows from north to south and is divided into the Upper Mekong and Lower Mekong. The river passes through mountains, forests, plains, and fertile delta regions.

3. Major Tributaries and Important Places of the Mekong River

The Mekong River is fed by several important tributaries, including the Tonle Sap River, Nam Ou River, Nam Tha River, Se Kong River, and Sun River. One of its most important connected water bodies is Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Important places along the river include its source near the Tibetan Plateau, Golden Triangle region, Luang Prabang in Laos, Vientiane, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and Ho Chi Minh City near the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. These locations are major cultural, economic, and transportation centres.
