MAJOR TEMPLES IN INDIA
1. Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also called the Big Temple, is one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture. It was built by the great Chola Emperor Rajaraja I around 1010 CE and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is famous for its massive granite vimana (tower), gigantic Nandi statue, and intricate sculptures. Remarkably, the temple was constructed almost entirely from granite, despite the absence of nearby quarries. It symbolizes the architectural brilliance, engineering skills, and cultural achievements of the Chola Empire and remains one of India's greatest historical monuments.
2. Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, Tamil Nadu
The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple was built by Rajendra I, son of Rajaraja I, in 1035 CE after his victorious northern campaign. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it served as the capital temple of the Chola Empire. The temple closely resembles Brihadeeswarar Temple but features softer architectural designs and exquisite sculptures. It is a part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple reflects the political power, artistic excellence, and engineering achievements of the Cholas. 3. Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram, Tamil Nadu
The Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram was built by Rajaraja II during the 12th century under the Chola Dynasty. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple derives its name from Airavata, the white elephant of Lord Indra, who is believed to have worshipped Shiva here. It is renowned for its finely carved stone sculptures, musical steps, and elegant chariot-shaped mandapa. The temple forms part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its artistic beauty, detailed carvings, and architectural sophistication represent the peak of medieval South Indian temple architecture.
4. Konark Sun Temple, Odisha
The Konark Sun Temple, located in Odisha, was built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty around 1250 CE. Dedicated to Surya (the Sun God), the temple is designed as a gigantic stone chariot with twelve pairs of intricately carved wheels and seven horses. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India's finest architectural masterpieces. The temple showcases remarkable engineering, astronomical knowledge, and artistic excellence. Although partially ruined today, Konark remains a symbol of Odisha's rich cultural heritage and attracts historians, architects, and tourists from around the world.
5. Jagannath Temple, Puri, Odisha
The Jagannath Temple in Puri was built by Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty during the 12th century. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra, it is one of Hinduism's Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The temple is world-famous for the annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival), attracting millions of devotees. Its massive temple complex, rich rituals, and ancient traditions make it one of India's most sacred religious centres. The temple has played a significant role in Odisha's cultural, spiritual, and historical development for centuries.
6. Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneswar, Odisha
The Lingaraja Temple in Bhubaneswar was constructed by Jajati Keshari of the Somavamsi Dynasty during the 11th century. Dedicated to Lord Harihara, a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu, it is one of Odisha's largest and oldest temples. Built in the Kalinga style of architecture, the temple features a towering spire, beautifully sculpted walls, and a vast temple complex. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is one of the earliest and best-preserved temples in the Khajuraho complex. The temple is famous for its highly detailed carvings, elegant architecture, and beautifully sculpted walls depicting mythological stories, celestial beings, and daily life. 9. Kailasa Temple, Ellora, Maharashtra

The temple features magnificent sculptures, pillars, halls, and towering structures created by removing rock from the top downward. It forms part of the Ellora Caves UNESCO World Heritage Site.
