MAJOR RIVERS AND RIVER SYSTEMS OF INDIA
1. Importance of Rivers in India
- Rivers form the backbone of India’s physical geography, agriculture, settlement, transport, ecology and cultural life.
- They provide water for drinking, irrigation, industries, hydropower and navigation, and also recharge groundwater and sustain wetlands.
- India’s river systems are broadly divided into Himalayan rivers and Peninsular rivers, with some important inland-drainage streams as well.
2. Himalayan River Systems
- The major Himalayan river systems are the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra.
- These rivers are generally perennial, receiving water from rainfall as well as snow and glacier melt.
- Their upper courses are characterised by deep valleys and gorges, while in the plains they form wide floodplains, meanders and extensive depositional features.
- The Himalayan systems carry large quantities of water and sediment and support some of the most densely populated regions of South Asia.
3. Ganga River System
- The Ganga originates in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand; its headstream, the Bhagirathi, emerges from the Gangotri glacier region and joins the Alaknanda at Devprayag.
- It flows across the northern plains and ultimately enters the Bay of Bengal through a vast deltaic system.
- Its major tributaries include the Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi and Son.
- The Central Water Commission records the Ganga’s length at about 2,525 km and its basin as India’s largest individual river basin.
4. Yamuna River
- The Yamuna rises from the Yamunotri glacier region in Uttarakhand and flows southward before joining the Ganga at Prayagraj.
- Important tributaries include the Chambal, Betwa, Ken and Sind.
- The Yamuna basin is agriculturally and economically important, but many stretches face serious pollution and urban wastewater pressures.
5. Brahmaputra River System
- The Brahmaputra rises in the Tibetan region, where it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo, and enters India through Arunachal Pradesh.
- It flows through Assam and subsequently into Bangladesh, where it joins the larger Ganga-Meghna drainage system.
- The river carries enormous sediment loads and frequently causes floods and channel changes in the Assam valley.
- The Brahmaputra basin is one of India’s most water-rich and ecologically significant regions.
6. Indus River System
- The Indus system includes the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
- Much of the system lies within the north-western Himalayan region before flowing towards Pakistan.
- The rivers are important for irrigation, hydropower and agriculture in northern India.
- The Ravi, for example, originates in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh and is largely fed by snowmelt in its upper reaches.
7. Peninsular River Systems
- Peninsular rivers are generally older than Himalayan rivers and flow through comparatively stable plateau terrain.
- Most are mainly rain-fed, though large reservoirs help regulate their seasonal flow.
- Major east-flowing rivers include the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri, while the Narmada and Tapi are important west-flowing rivers.
- The east-flowing rivers generally form broad deltas before entering the Bay of Bengal.
8. Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Mahanadi
- The Godavari, often called the largest Peninsular river system, rises in Maharashtra and flows about 1,465 km before reaching the Bay of Bengal.
- The Krishna also originates in Maharashtra and flows about 1,400 km to the Bay of Bengal.
- The Kaveri rises in Karnataka and flows for about 800 km, supporting irrigation and hydropower in southern India.
- The Mahanadi rises in Chhattisgarh, flows through Odisha and covers about 851 km before entering the Bay of Bengal.
9. Narmada and Tapi
- The Narmada rises in the Amarkantak region of Madhya Pradesh and flows westward through a rift valley between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges.
- It travels about 1,312 km before entering the Arabian Sea.
- The Tapi, another west-flowing river, also rises in Madhya Pradesh and travels about 724 km before reaching the Arabian Sea.
- Unlike most major Peninsular rivers, the Narmada and Tapi generally form estuaries rather than large deltas.
10. Classification and Significance
- India’s drainage may therefore be understood through the Himalayan systems, east-flowing Peninsular systems, west-flowing Peninsular systems and inland-drainage systems.
- Rivers are crucial for agriculture, food security, hydropower, fisheries, biodiversity, cultural traditions and regional economies.
- At the same time, they face serious challenges from pollution, over-extraction, encroachment, sedimentation, floods, declining environmental flows and climate variability.
- Effective river-basin management, pollution control, wetland conservation, efficient irrigation and flood forecasting are therefore essential for sustainable water security.
