1. Introduction
- India’s churches reflect nearly two millennia of Christian tradition, together with Portuguese, British, French and indigenous architectural influences.
- They function as centres of worship, pilgrimage, education, charity and community service.
- Major churches are also important examples of Gothic, Neo-Gothic, Baroque and Indo-European architecture.
2. San Thome Basilica — Chennai, Tamil Nadu
- San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic church traditionally associated with the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle.
- Its origins lie in a Portuguese church established in the 16th century; the present structure was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style in 1896.
- It is one of the few major Christian shrines traditionally believed to have been built over the tomb of an Apostle. (Incredible India)
- Therefore, it should not simply be described as “India’s oldest church.”
3. Basilica of Bom Jesus — Old Goa

- It contains the tomb and mortal remains associated with St. Francis Xavier.

6. St. Philomena’s Church — Mysuru, Karnataka
- St. Philomena’s Church is a major Neo-Gothic landmark of Mysuru.
- Its design was inspired by European Gothic cathedrals, particularly the Cologne Cathedral tradition.
- Its twin spires rise to about 53 metres, and stained-glass windows depict events from the life of Christ. (Incredible India)
- It is safer to describe it as one of Asia’s large churches, rather than assigning an uncertain numerical rank.
7. St. Paul’s Cathedral — Kolkata
- St. Paul’s Cathedral, completed in 1847, is one of Kolkata’s most prominent Anglican churches.
- It is noted for its Gothic-inspired architecture, stained-glass windows, memorials and imposing spire.
- The cathedral reflects Kolkata’s colonial-era architectural heritage and continues to be an important place of worship. (Incredible India)
8. Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health — Velankanni
- Velankanni Basilica in Tamil Nadu is one of India’s most famous Marian pilgrimage centres.
- It is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health and attracts pilgrims from different religions and regions.

9. Other Important Churches
- Other notable churches include St. Joseph’s Cathedral at Lucknow, Immaculate Conception Cathedral at Puducherry, St. Francis Church at Kochi and St. Mary’s Church at Fort St. George, Chennai.
- St. Mary’s Church at Fort St. George is particularly important for understanding the early British presence in southern India. (Incredible India)
- Regional church architecture frequently adapted European designs to Indian climate, materials and craftsmanship.
10. Cultural Significance
- India’s churches preserve valuable traditions of architecture, sculpture, painting, music, festivals and pilgrimage.
- Many Christian institutions also make substantial contributions to education, healthcare, social welfare and humanitarian service.
- Goa’s churches, San Thome Basilica, Velankanni, St. Paul’s Cathedral and other historic shrines illustrate the long interaction between Christianity and Indian society.
- Their conservation is important not only for religious communities but also for protecting India’s plural, multicultural and architectural heritage.
