1. Mahananda River

The Mahananda River is an important trans-boundary tributary of the Ganga. It flows through the Indian states of West Bengal and Bihar before entering Bangladesh. Originating in the Darjeeling Hills of the Eastern Himalayas, it supports agriculture, biodiversity, and local livelihoods across the Indo-Bangladesh river basin region.

2. Origin – Paglajhora Falls

The Mahananda River originates from Paglajhora Falls on Mahaldiram Hill near Chimli, east of Kurseong in Darjeeling district, West Bengal. The source lies at an elevation of about 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) above sea level. Its Himalayan origin provides a perennial water supply throughout much of the year.

3. Course of the Mahananda River

From its Himalayan source, the Mahananda flows southward through the plains of North Bengal and Bihar. It then enters Bangladesh and eventually rejoins India before meeting the Ganga. The river acts as an important drainage channel and supports fertile agricultural lands along its course.

4. Balason River

The Balason River is a major tributary of the Mahananda River. Originating in the Darjeeling Hills, it carries significant runoff from mountainous regions. The river contributes water and sediment to the Mahananda system and plays an important role in irrigation, ecology, and regional water resources management.

5. Mechi River

The Mechi River is an important tributary of the Mahananda River and forms part of the boundary between India and Nepal in certain stretches. Originating in the Himalayas, it contributes to the river basin's hydrology and supports agriculture, settlements, and biodiversity in the border region.

6. Kankai River

The Kankai River is a significant tributary of the Mahananda River flowing mainly through eastern Nepal and northern Bihar. It originates in the Himalayan foothills and carries seasonal as well as perennial flows. The river enhances water availability, agricultural productivity, and ecological balance within the basin.

7. Kalindri River

The Kalindri River is an important tributary connected with the Mahananda-Ganga river system in West Bengal. Flowing through fertile plains, it supports irrigation, fisheries, and local livelihoods. The river also contributes to regional drainage and helps sustain agricultural activities in surrounding rural areas.

8. Confluence with the Ganga

The Mahananda joins the Ganga as its last major left-bank tributary in West Bengal. This confluence is geographically significant because it links Himalayan waters with the larger Ganga basin. The meeting point contributes to sediment transport, fertile floodplains, and the hydrological network of eastern India.
