LONAR LAKE

1. Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake is a unique meteorite impact crater lake located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra in the Vidarbha region. It was formed around 50,000–52,000 years ago when a meteorite struck the basaltic rocks of the Deccan Plateau. The lake is one of the world's largest meteorite impact craters formed in basaltic terrain. It is both saline and alkaline, making it scientifically important. The lake supports rare microorganisms and rich biodiversity. Lonar Lake is a Ramsar Site, Wildlife Sanctuary, and National Geo-Heritage Monument. It is an important destination for scientific research, tourism, and geological studies.

2. Why in News?

Lonar Lake recently came into the news because rising water levels submerged parts of nearby ancient temples, including the historic Kamalja Devi Temple. The increase in water level has raised concerns about the conservation of cultural heritage surrounding the lake. Scientists are studying whether the rise is caused by increased rainfall, groundwater recharge, or other environmental factors. The event highlights the impact of climate variability on historical monuments and ecosystems. It also emphasizes the need for sustainable lake management, continuous monitoring, and protection of both the natural environment and archaeological structures around Lonar Lake.

3. About Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake is located in Maharashtra's Buldhana district and was created by a meteorite impact approximately 50,000–52,000 years ago. The impact occurred on the basaltic rocks of the Deccan Plateau, making it one of the few known impact craters formed in volcanic basalt anywhere in the world. The lake has no outlet and contains highly alkaline and saline water. It serves as a natural laboratory for studying meteorite impacts, planetary geology, and extremophile microorganisms. Due to its exceptional geological, ecological, and historical importance, Lonar Lake has gained international recognition and remains a valuable scientific and environmental heritage site.
