LENA RIVER

1. Introduction to the Lena River

The Lena River is one of the longest rivers in the world and the longest river flowing entirely within Russia. It originates in the Baikal Mountains of southern Siberia and flows northward across eastern Russia before emptying into the Laptev Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. The river is approximately 4,400 kilometres long and is often called the lifeline of Siberia. It supports transportation, fisheries, forestry, mining, and local communities. The Lena River is also ecologically important, with vast wetlands, forests, and one of the world's largest river deltas that support rich biodiversity.

2. Geographical Location

The Lena River originates in the Baikal Mountains, near Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, Russia. It flows northward through the vast Siberian Plain before reaching the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The river is approximately 4,400 kilometres long and has a drainage basin covering nearly 2.49 million square kilometres, making it one of the largest river basins in the world. Unlike many major rivers, the Lena flows entirely within the borders of Russia. Its northward flow through frozen regions makes it one of the most important Arctic river systems and a key geographical feature of Siberia.

3. Major Tributaries

The Lena River receives water from several important tributaries that increase its flow across Siberia. Major tributaries include the Vitim, Aldan, Vilyuy, Olekma, and Kirenga rivers. These rivers originate in the mountains and plateaus of eastern Siberia and contribute significant amounts of water, especially during spring snowmelt. They support transportation, fisheries, forestry, and local settlements throughout the basin. Together, these tributaries create an extensive freshwater network that nourishes forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. They also help maintain one of the largest drainage systems in northern Asia and support Siberia's economic activities.
