IRRAWADDY RIVER

1. Irrawaddy River – Introduction

The Irrawaddy River is the most important river in Myanmar (Burma) and is often called the "Lifeline of Myanmar." It originates in the Mali and N'Mai Rivers in the northern Himalayan region of Kachin State and flows southward through the country's central plains before emptying into the Andaman Sea through the Irrawaddy Delta. The river has supported Myanmar's civilization, agriculture, transportation, and culture for centuries. Flowing entirely within Myanmar, it is the country's longest and most significant river, providing water, fertile land, and livelihoods for millions of people living along its banks.

2. Geographical Features of the Irrawaddy River

The Irrawaddy River originates in Kachin State in northern Myanmar, where the Mali and N'Mai Rivers meet. It flows entirely through Myanmar from north to south before forming the Irrawaddy Delta and emptying into the Andaman Sea. The river is approximately 2,170 kilometres long and drains one of Myanmar's largest river basins. It passes through mountains, fertile plains, forests, and delta regions. The river serves as the country's principal waterway and is divided into the Upper Irrawaddy, Middle Irrawaddy, Lower Irrawaddy, and Delta region, each having unique geographical and economic importance.

3. Major Cities Along the Irrawaddy River

Several important cities have developed along the Irrawaddy River due to its strategic location and abundant water resources. Major cities include Myitkyina, Bhamo, Kalemyo, Mandalay, Pye (Prome), Pyapon, and Yangon, located near the river's delta region. Mandalay, the cultural capital of Myanmar, lies on the riverbank and has historically been an important trade centre. These cities depend on the Irrawaddy for drinking water, transportation, irrigation, fishing, and commerce. River transport remains one of the most economical means of moving people and goods across Myanmar, especially in remote regions.
