Iran–Israel Dispute: Comprehensive Note

The Iran–Israel conflict is one of the most enduring geopolitical rivalries in West Asia, rooted in historical, ideological, and strategic factors. Initially, relations between Iran and Israel were cordial during the reign of the Shah, with cooperation in defence and trade. However, the turning point came with the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and established an Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Khomeini. The new regime adopted a strong anti-Israel stance, severed diplomatic ties, and began supporting Palestinian causes and militant groups like Hezbollah.

The basic reasons for adversarial relations include ideological differences (Islamic revolutionary ideology vs. Zionism), Iran’s opposition to Israel’s legitimacy, Israel’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme, and their involvement in proxy conflicts across the region. Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and Israel’s military strikes on Iranian assets in Syria, have deepened hostility.

In the present context (2026), tensions have escalated into direct confrontation involving missile strikes, targeted killings, and disruption of critical routes like the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global energy markets. The conflict now extends beyond proxy warfare to overt military engagement, raising fears of a wider regional war.

Looking ahead, future prospects remain uncertain. While diplomatic resolution is possible, continued mistrust, nuclear concerns, and regional rivalries may prolong instability.
