INDUSTRIES AND MINERALS OF INDIA — DISTRIBUTION, IMPORTANCE AND DEVELOPMENT
1. Importance of Industry
- Industry converts raw materials into useful goods and is a major component of economic development.
- Industrialisation promotes employment, productivity, technological progress, exports, infrastructure and higher incomes.

2. Classification of Industries
- Industries may be classified by size as cottage, small, medium and large-scale industries.
- On the basis of raw material, they may be agro-based, mineral-based, marine-based or forest-based.
- They may also be grouped into basic industries, consumer industries and capital-goods industries.
- Small and medium enterprises are particularly important for decentralised employment and entrepreneurship.
3. Major Industries of India
- Important industries include iron and steel, textiles, automobiles, cement, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum refining, food processing, electronics and information technology.
- Cotton textiles are concentrated in states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, while iron and steel plants developed close to coal and iron-ore belts in eastern and central India.
- The IT industry has major centres such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the National Capital Region.
4. Iron and Steel Industry
- Iron and steel is considered a basic or core industry because its products are essential for construction, machinery, transport and infrastructure.

- The sector depends heavily on iron ore, coking coal, limestone, power, transport and markets.
5. Meaning and Types of Minerals
- Minerals are naturally occurring substances with characteristic physical and chemical properties.
- They are broadly classified into metallic and non-metallic minerals.
- Metallic minerals include iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper and chromite, while limestone and phosphorite are important non-metallic minerals.
- Coal, petroleum and natural gas are conventionally treated separately as energy resources.
6. Major Mineral Resources
- India possesses important deposits of iron ore, bauxite, manganese, chromite, limestone, coal, copper, lead and zinc.
- In 2024–25, Odisha accounted for about 55% of iron-ore production and about 74% of bauxite production.
- Rajasthan accounted for essentially all reported production of lead and zinc concentrates, while Odisha dominated chromite production. (Ministry of Mines)
7. Iron Ore and Bauxite
- Iron ore is the principal raw material for steel production and is concentrated especially in Odisha, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
- Government data show that iron ore is the most valuable mineral covered under the MCDR framework; production reached roughly 278 million tonnes during April 2025–February 2026. (Ministry of Mines)

8. Limestone, Manganese and Other Minerals
- Limestone is indispensable for cement and is also used in iron and steel and chemical industries.
- Manganese is important in steel-making and alloy production; Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are major producers.
- Copper is vital for electrical equipment, electronics and renewable-energy systems, while chromite is essential for stainless steel.
- Mineral resources therefore provide the raw-material foundation for several manufacturing chains.
9. Economic Importance of Mining
- Mining supplies raw materials to steel, cement, power, construction, transport and manufacturing industries.
- It generates employment, government revenue, exports and regional infrastructure.

- However, mineral-rich regions also require greater value addition and equitable sharing of development benefits.
10. Challenges and Sustainable Development
- Mining and industry can cause deforestation, land degradation, air and water pollution, displacement and waste generation.
- Sustainable mineral development requires scientific mining, rehabilitation of mined areas, efficient use of resources, recycling and strict environmental regulation.
- Industrial policy increasingly emphasises clean technology, energy efficiency, domestic manufacturing and resource security.
