INDIA'S ISRAEL HABIT MEETS WEST ASIAN REALITIES

1. India's Israel Policy and West Asian Realities

India's relationship with Israel has grown significantly in defence, agriculture, technology, intelligence, and innovation over the past three decades. However, changing geopolitical realities in West Asia require India to maintain a balanced foreign policy. While Israel remains an important strategic partner, India also has deep political, economic, and energy ties with countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and Qatar. Regional conflicts, including tensions involving Iran and Israel, directly affect India's energy security, trade routes, and diaspora. Therefore, India follows a policy of strategic autonomy, protecting its national interests while maintaining constructive relations with all regional partners.

2. Reconfigured West Asia

West Asia has undergone major geopolitical changes due to conflicts, shifting alliances, and competition among regional and global powers. Rising tensions between Israel and Iran, instability in Syria and Yemen, and changing US involvement have reshaped the region's strategic environment. Important maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz remain critical for global energy supplies and international trade. These developments directly influence India's economic and security interests because a large share of India's oil imports and overseas workforce are connected to the Gulf region. India must therefore continuously adapt its foreign policy to respond effectively to evolving regional dynamics.

3. Iran Cannot Be Ignored

Iran occupies a strategically important position in India's foreign policy due to its geographical location, energy resources, and connectivity projects. It provides India access to Central Asia and Afghanistan through the Chabahar Port, reducing dependence on other routes. Iran also influences regional stability across West Asia through its political and military networks. Maintaining good relations with Iran supports India's energy security and long-term strategic interests. At the same time, India balances its ties with Israel, the United States, and Gulf countries. A pragmatic and balanced approach enables India to protect its national interests while avoiding unnecessary regional confrontations.

4. Beyond a Binary Choice

India's foreign policy does not force a choice between Israel and the Arab world. Instead, it follows the principle of multi-alignment, maintaining strong partnerships with multiple countries based on mutual interests. India cooperates with Israel in defence, technology, and innovation while strengthening economic, energy, and diaspora relations with Gulf nations and maintaining strategic engagement with Iran. This balanced approach reflects India's commitment to strategic autonomy rather than alliance politics. By engaging all sides, India increases its diplomatic flexibility, protects trade and energy interests, supports regional stability, and strengthens its position as a responsible global and regional power.

5. Importance for India

West Asia is one of the most important regions for India's foreign policy because of its strategic, economic, and security significance. The region supplies a large share of India's crude oil and natural gas, hosts millions of Indian expatriates, and serves as a major trading partner. Regional instability can disrupt energy supplies, shipping routes, and remittances sent by Indians working abroad. India therefore seeks peace, stability, and balanced diplomatic engagement with all countries in the region. Its foreign policy focuses on protecting national interests, ensuring energy security, expanding economic cooperation, and promoting long-term regional peace and prosperity.
