INDIAN AGRICULTURE — CROPPING PATTERN, IMPORTANCE, TECHNOLOGY AND CHALLENGES
1. Importance of Agriculture
- Agriculture remains a fundamental sector of the Indian economy because it supports food security, rural livelihoods, employment, raw materials and allied activities.
- The Economic Survey 2025–26 notes that agriculture and allied activities account for 46.1% of India’s workforce and remain central to inclusive growth. (India Budget)
- The sector also provides inputs to food processing, textiles, sugar, edible oils and several rural industries.
2. Contribution to the Economy
- Agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing together accounted for about 15.2% of nominal GDP in FY 2025–26, according to the First Advance Estimates cited in the Economic Survey. (India Budget)
- Although its GDP share has declined over time with structural transformation, its employment share remains much larger.
- This gap highlights the continuing challenge of raising agricultural productivity and farm incomes.
3. Major Cropping Seasons
- Indian agriculture is strongly influenced by the monsoon climate.
- The principal seasons are Kharif, Rabi and Zaid.
- Kharif crops are generally sown with the onset of the southwest monsoon and include rice, maize, cotton, soybean, groundnut and pulses.
- Rabi crops are mainly winter crops such as wheat, gram, mustard and peas. NCERT broadly places Kharif from June–October and Rabi from November–April. (NCERT)
- Zaid crops are grown during the short summer period between Rabi and Kharif.
4. Major Crops
- India produces a wide variety of crops because of differences in soil, rainfall, temperature and irrigation.
- Major food crops include rice, wheat, maize, millets and pulses.
- Important commercial crops include cotton, sugarcane, jute, tea, coffee, rubber and oilseeds.
- Horticulture, livestock and fisheries are becoming increasingly important sources of farm income. (India Budget)
5. Irrigation and Water Management
- Indian agriculture depends on both rainfall and irrigation from canals, wells, tube wells, tanks and modern micro-irrigation systems.
- Drip and sprinkler irrigation can improve water-use efficiency, especially in water-scarce regions.
- Expansion of irrigation reduces dependence on uncertain monsoon rainfall and enables multiple cropping.
- Efficient groundwater management is increasingly necessary because excessive extraction has created stress in several agricultural regions.
6. Agricultural Technology
- Modern farming increasingly uses tractors, harvesters, improved seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, farm machinery and digital technologies.
- The Green Revolution significantly increased production of wheat and rice through improved varieties, irrigation and modern inputs.
- Current agricultural policy increasingly emphasises precision farming, drones, digital advisories, climate-resilient varieties and efficient input use.
- NCERT identifies crop-variety improvement, crop-production management and crop-protection management as major approaches to improving agricultural yield. (NCERT)
7. Rain-fed and Irrigated Agriculture
- Indian agriculture cannot be divided simply into only two rigid types, but an important distinction exists between rain-fed and irrigated farming.
- Rain-fed agriculture depends heavily on seasonal rainfall and is common in many dryland regions.
- Irrigated agriculture enjoys a more assured water supply and often permits intensive and multiple cropping.
- Cropping patterns also depend on soil, markets, household resources and profitability. (NCERT)
8. Major Problems
- Important constraints include small and fragmented holdings, uneven irrigation, low mechanisation in some regions, inadequate investment and stagnant yields in several crops. (India Budget)
- Farmers also face input-price increases, post-harvest losses, inadequate storage, market-price fluctuations and indebtedness.
- Climate change is increasing risks from droughts, floods, heat waves, irregular rainfall and new pest patterns.
9. Food Security and Diversification
- Agricultural production is essential for maintaining India’s large Public Distribution System and national food security.
- Diversification towards pulses, oilseeds, horticulture, livestock and fisheries can improve nutrition as well as farmer incomes.
- Recent growth in allied activities has been particularly important for strengthening rural livelihoods. (India Budget)
10. Future Direction
- Indian agriculture needs a transition from merely increasing production to achieving higher productivity, sustainability, profitability and resilience.
- Priorities include better irrigation, soil-health management, quality seeds, storage, value chains, farmer-producer organisations, agricultural research and market access.
- Sustainable agriculture must conserve soil, water and biodiversity while improving farmers’ incomes.
- Thus, agriculture remains crucial not only for food production but also for employment, rural development, nutritional security and inclusive economic growth.
