IMPORTANT GLOBAL REPORTS AND INDICES — ISSUING ORGANISATIONS, INDICATORS AND INDIA’S POSITION
1. Importance of Global Reports and Indices
- International reports and indices compare countries on parameters such as human development, gender equality, happiness, environmental performance, innovation and economic freedom.
- They help governments, researchers and policymakers identify strengths, weaknesses and areas requiring policy intervention.
- Rankings should always be read with their methodology, data year and coverage, because different indices measure different aspects of development.
2. Human Development Report (HDR)
- The Human Development Report is published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- Its best-known measure, the Human Development Index (HDI), evaluates three dimensions: health, education and standard of living.
- These are measured through life expectancy, schooling indicators and GNI per capita.
- In the Human Development Report 2025, India ranked 130th among 193 countries, with an HDI value of 0.685, remaining in the medium human-development category. (UNDP)
3. Global Gender Gap Report
- The Global Gender Gap Report is published annually by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
- It measures gender parity across four dimensions: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.
- The index measures the gap between women and men rather than absolute development levels.
- In 2025, India ranked 131st among 148 economies, with about 64.4% of the gender gap closed. (Foro Económico Mundial)
4. World Happiness Report
- The World Happiness Report assesses people’s self-reported evaluations of their lives using data principally from the Gallup World Poll.
- The 2025 report was published by the Wellbeing Research Centre, University of Oxford, in partnership with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and an independent editorial board.
- Factors used to explain differences include income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption.
- India ranked 118th among 147 countries in the 2025 report. (World Happiness Report)
5. Environmental Performance Index (EPI)
- The Environmental Performance Index is produced principally by researchers at Yale University, with collaborators including Columbia University.
- The 2024 EPI used 58 indicators across 11 issue categories, including climate change, air quality, biodiversity, waste and ecosystem health.
- India ranked 176th with a score of 27.6 in the 2024 EPI. (Environmental Performance Index)
- The EPI is an analytical academic index and should not be confused with an official United Nations ranking.
6. Global Innovation Index (GII)
- The Global Innovation Index is published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
- It assesses innovation capabilities using roughly 80 indicators, grouped into innovation inputs and outputs.
- Indicators cover institutions, human capital, infrastructure, business sophistication, knowledge creation and technology.
- In the GII 2025, India improved to 38th among 139 economies and remained the highest-ranked lower-middle-income economy. (WIPO)
7. Index of Economic Freedom
- The Index of Economic Freedom is published by the Heritage Foundation; current editions should not be attributed jointly to the Wall Street Journal.
- It evaluates areas including rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency and market openness.
- In the 2025 Index, India ranked 128th globally, with a score of 53.0, classified by the publisher as “mostly unfree.” (Heritage Foundation)
- Since this index reflects a particular policy framework, its findings should be interpreted alongside other economic indicators.
8. Difference Between Reports and Indices
- A report may provide extensive analysis, trends and policy discussion, while an index condenses selected indicators into a numerical score or ranking.
- A high GDP rank does not automatically imply a high HDI, happiness, gender-parity or environmental rank.
- Therefore, rankings should not be treated as interchangeable measures of national performance.
9. Utility for India
- These reports reveal India’s strong progress in areas such as innovation and human development, while highlighting persistent challenges in gender parity, environmental quality and broader well-being.
- They can support evidence-based policy by enabling international benchmarking and identification of structural gaps.
- However, methodological changes can affect rankings from one edition to another.
10. Quick Revision
- HDR/HDI — UNDP — India 130th (2025 report).
- Global Gender Gap — WEF — India 131st (2025).
- World Happiness Report — Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre with partners — India 118th (2025).
- EPI — Yale-led — India 176th (2024).
- Global Innovation Index — WIPO — India 38th (2025).
- Index of Economic Freedom — Heritage Foundation — India 128th (2025).
- These indices are valuable examination tools, but their publisher, indicators, year and methodology should always be remembered together with the rank.
