PRERNA FOR IAS
HUMAYUN
1. Early Life of Humayun
Humayun was born on 6 March 1508 in Kabul and was the eldest son of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire. His full name was Nasir-ud-din Muhammad Humayun. From childhood, he received a good education and developed interests in astronomy, geography, literature, and Persian culture. Babur considered him his rightful heir and prepared him for leadership. Humayun was known for his intelligence, kindness, and scholarly nature. His early experiences in administration and military affairs helped him understand the challenges of ruling an empire. These qualities later shaped his career as the second Mughal emperor of India.
2. Accession to the Throne
After the death of Babur on 26 December 1530, Humayun became the second Mughal emperor of India. However, his rule began under difficult circumstances. He faced opposition from rival nobles, ambitious brothers, and regional rulers who challenged Mughal authority. Despite these problems, Humayun attempted to strengthen the empire and conducted military campaigns against enemies such as Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Although he achieved some victories, maintaining control over the vast empire proved challenging. His early reign was marked by political instability and internal conflicts, which weakened his position and created opportunities for powerful rivals to rise against him.
