GREECE

1. Context (Why in News?)

Greece was recently in the news after India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services were officially launched in the country through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). This initiative enables Indian travelers, students, and businesses to make secure and seamless digital payments while visiting Greece. It also strengthens economic and financial cooperation between India and Greece under the Digital India initiative. The launch promotes cross-border digital transactions and enhances tourism and trade between the two countries. For UPSC aspirants, this development highlights India's growing fintech influence and international expansion of its digital payment ecosystem.

2. About Greece

Greece is a country located in southeastern Europe at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Athens, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Greece lies at the meeting point of Europe, Asia, and Africa, making it strategically important. It is surrounded by the Aegean Sea to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Ionian Sea to the west. Greece is a Parliamentary Republic with a rich history as the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and Western civilization. Tourism, shipping, agriculture, and services are major contributors to its economy.

3. Borders

Greece shares land borders with four countries: Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia to the north, Bulgaria to the northeast, and Turkey to the east. These borders make Greece an important gateway between Europe and Asia. The country also has an extensive coastline along the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas, giving it immense maritime significance. Greece's geographical location has historically made it a center of trade, culture, and military strategy. Its proximity to the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, and Middle East enhances its geopolitical importance within Europe, NATO, and the European Union.
