Classical Dances of India
1. Classical Dances of India
India officially recognizes eight classical dance forms, each representing centuries of artistic excellence, spirituality, and storytelling. These are Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kathak (Uttar Pradesh), Kathakali (Kerala), Mohiniyattam (Kerala), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Odissi (Odisha), Manipuri (Manipur), and Sattriya (Assam). These dance forms are based on the principles of the Natya Shastra, written by Bharata Muni. Classical dances combine graceful body movements, facial expressions (Abhinaya), hand gestures (Mudras), rhythm, music, and costumes to narrate stories from Hindu epics and mythology. They are among India's greatest cultural treasures and enjoy worldwide recognition.
2. Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is one of India's oldest and most respected classical dance forms, originating in Tamil Nadu. It was traditionally performed by temple dancers called Devadasis and is based on Bharata Muni's Natya Shastra. The dance combines Bhava (expression), Raga (melody), Tala (rhythm), and Natya (drama). Performers use precise footwork, graceful hand gestures (Mudras), expressive facial movements, and storytelling to portray episodes from Hindu mythology. Bharatanatyam performances generally begin with Alarippu and conclude with Tillana. Today, it is performed globally and is regarded as a symbol of India's classical artistic heritage.
