DARK ENERGY

1. Dark Energy

Dark energy is a mysterious form of energy believed to be responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Scientists cannot observe it directly, but its effects can be measured through the movement of galaxies. It makes up about 68% of the universe and acts throughout space, pushing galaxies apart.

2. Expanding Space

Expanding space refers to the continuous stretching of the universe since the Big Bang. As space expands, the distance between galaxies increases over time. This expansion was first discovered through observations showing galaxies moving away from each other. Dark energy is believed to be causing this expansion to accelerate.

3. Galaxies Moving Apart

Galaxies are moving away from one another because the universe itself is expanding. The farther a galaxy is from Earth, the faster it appears to recede. This observation, known as Hubble’s Law, provided strong evidence for the expanding universe and helped shape modern cosmological theories and understanding.

4. Accelerating Expansion

Accelerating expansion means that the universe is not only expanding but doing so at an increasing rate. Astronomers discovered this in the late 1990s by studying distant supernovae. The unexpected acceleration suggested the presence of an unknown force, now called dark energy, influencing the universe’s large-scale behavior.

5. Earlier Universe

In the earlier universe, galaxies were much closer together because the universe was smaller. Over billions of years, space expanded, increasing the distance between galaxies. Studying the early universe helps scientists understand cosmic evolution, the formation of galaxies, and the forces shaping the universe today.
