CRICKET — HISTORY, FORMATS, INSTITUTIONS AND IMPORTANT RECORDS

1. Origin and Development of Cricket

• Cricket originated in England and gradually developed into an organised international sport.
• The first officially recognised Test match was played between Australia and England at Melbourne in 1877.
• Modern international cricket is played mainly in Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) formats.
• A team normally consists of 11 players, and the basic contest is between batting, bowling and fielding sides.

2. International Cricket Council (ICC)

• The global governing body of cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC).
• It originated as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909, when representatives of England, Australia and South Africa met at Lord’s. (icc)
• It became the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and later adopted its present name.
• The ICC administers major global tournaments and international playing regulations.

3. India’s Entry into Test Cricket

• India became part of the international cricket structure during the late 1920s.
• India played its first Test match against England at Lord’s from 25–28 June 1932.

4. Test Cricket

• Test cricket is the longest international format and may continue for a maximum of five days.
• Each team normally has two innings, subject to the match situation and result.
• Test cricket is regarded as a demanding examination of batting technique, bowling skill, endurance and strategy.
• Sachin Tendulkar remains the highest run-scorer in men’s Test cricket with 15,921 runs. (icc)

5. One Day International Cricket

• In an ODI, each side normally receives 50 overs.
• The first ODI was played between Australia and England at Melbourne in 1971 after a Test match was disrupted by rain. (icc)
• Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 remains the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket. (icc)
• He is also the only player to have scored three ODI double centuries. (icc)

6. ICC Cricket World Cup

• The first men’s Cricket World Cup was held in England in 1975.
• Eight teams participated and the West Indies defeated Australia in the final at Lord’s. (icc)
• India won its first men’s ODI World Cup in 1983 under Kapil Dev.
• India again became ODI world champion in 2011 under M.S. Dhoni.

7. Twenty20 Cricket

• T20 is the shortest established international format, with each side normally receiving 20 overs.
• The first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was held in 2007, and India won the tournament under M.S. Dhoni.
• T20 cricket emphasises aggressive batting, innovative bowling, athletic fielding and rapid tactical decision-making.
• The format has expanded significantly through domestic leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

8. Important Batting Records

• Brian Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in men’s Test cricket—400 not out against England in 2004. (icc)
• Rohit Sharma’s 264 is the men’s ODI individual record.
• Sachin Tendulkar became the first male cricketer to score an ODI double century, making 200 not out against South Africa in 2010. (icc)

9. Bowling and Fielding

• Bowling may be broadly classified into fast, medium-pace and spin bowling.
• Bowlers seek wickets through pace, swing, seam, spin, variation and changes of length.
• Fielding has become increasingly important, particularly in limited-overs cricket, where saved runs and catches frequently decide matches.
• Cricket therefore requires coordinated performance by batsmen, bowlers, wicketkeepers and fielders.

10. Significance of Cricket in India

• Cricket is one of India’s most widely followed sports and has major social, cultural and economic significance.
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was formally established in 1928 and administers organised cricket in India. (BCCI)
• India’s achievements in the 1983 and 2011 ODI World Cups and 2007 T20 World Cup greatly expanded the sport’s popularity.
• For examination purposes, remember: First Test—1877; ICC origin—1909; India’s first Test—1932; first ODI—1971; first World Cup—1975; India’s first ODI World Cup—1983.
• Cricket combines skill, discipline, strategy, teamwork and sporting competition, making it an important part of India’s contemporary sporting culture.
