ATMOSPHERE
1. Atmosphere – Basic Concept
The atmosphere is the envelope of gases surrounding the Earth, held in place by gravity. It is not uniform or constant; its composition, temperature, pressure, and density vary with altitude. The atmosphere protects life by filtering harmful solar radiation, regulating temperature, and supporting weather and climate systems. It contains essential gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. Though commonly considered to extend up to about 100 km (Kármán Line), it gradually merges into outer space through the exosphere. Without the atmosphere, Earth would experience extreme temperatures and life as we know it would not exist.
2. Composition of Dry Air
Dry air is a mixture of gases essential for sustaining life and maintaining Earth’s climate. Nitrogen constitutes abou
