Arrival of European Companies in India

The arrival of European companies in India marked the beginning of a new phase in Indian history. Motivated by the profitable spice trade, European nations searched for direct sea routes to Asia. The Portuguese were the first to arrive when Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498. They were followed by the Dutch, English, Danish, French, and Swedish trading companies. Initially, these companies established trading factories along the Indian coast to conduct commerce. Over time, competition among them intensified, especially between the British and the French. Eventually, the British East India Company emerged victorious and established colonial rule in India, lasting until 1947.

Portuguese in India

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a strong presence in India. Led by Vasco da Gama, they reached Calicut in 1498 after discovering the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope. Their first trading centre was established at Cochin, and later they captured Goa, which became their main headquarters. Famous Portuguese governors included Francisco de Almeida and Afonso de Albuquerque, who expanded Portuguese influence. Besides trade, they promoted Christianity and introduced new crops and customs. However, their power gradually declined due to competition from other European powers, especially the Dutch and the British.
