1. Capital
Andorra la Vella is the capital and largest city of Andorra, a small European microstate located in the Pyrenees Mountains. Situated at an altitude of about 1,023 metres above sea level, it is recognized as the highest capital city in Europe. The city serves as the country's political, administrative, commercial, and cultural centre. Tourism, banking, and retail shopping are the major economic activities due to low taxation. Surrounded by scenic mountains, Andorra la Vella attracts visitors throughout the year for skiing, hiking, and cultural tourism. It is also home to the national government, parliament, and important public institutions.
2. Currency
The official currency of Andorra is the Euro (EUR). Although Andorra is not a member of the European Union (EU), it uses the Euro through a formal monetary agreement with the EU. This arrangement simplifies trade, tourism, and financial transactions with neighbouring countries such as France and Spain. Before adopting the Euro, Andorra used both the French Franc and the Spanish Peseta. The Euro supports the country's economy, which depends heavily on tourism, banking, and retail trade. Andorra also issues its own Euro collector coins under the monetary agreement, making them popular among coin collectors.
3. Official Language
The official language of Andorra is Catalan, making it the only sovereign country in the world where Catalan is the sole official language. Catalan is used in government administration, education, legal proceedings, and official communication. Due to Andorra's location between France and Spain, many residents also speak Spanish, French, and Portuguese, especially in business and tourism. The government actively promotes the preservation of Catalan as an important part of the country's cultural identity. Knowledge of multiple languages has helped Andorra develop strong tourism and international business sectors while preserving its unique linguistic and cultural heritage.
4. Geographical Location
Andorra is a landlocked European microstate located in the eastern Pyrenees Mountains, between France to the north and Spain to the south. Covering an area of approximately 468 square kilometres, it is one of Europe's smallest independent countries. Its mountainous terrain consists of valleys, rivers, forests, and high peaks, making it a popular destination for skiing, hiking, and adventure tourism. Despite its small size, Andorra enjoys a high standard of living and a strong economy based on tourism, banking, and retail trade. Its strategic location has historically connected the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe.
5. Bordering Countries
Andorra shares international borders with two countries. France lies to the north, while Spain borders the country to the south. There is no direct access to the sea because Andorra is completely landlocked. Most trade, tourism, and transportation depend on road networks connecting Andorra with its neighbouring countries. The close relationship with France and Spain has influenced Andorra's economy, culture, language, and political development for centuries. Its location in the Pyrenees Mountains has also helped preserve its independence and unique identity despite being surrounded by two major European nations.
6. Government
Andorra follows a Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Co-Principality, making it one of the world's most unique political systems. The country has two Co-Princes as Heads of State: the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell (Spain). Executive authority is exercised by the Prime Minister, who heads the elected government. Legislative power rests with the General Council, Andorra's parliament. This constitutional arrangement combines democratic governance with centuries-old traditions. The political system ensures stability, protects national sovereignty, and reflects the country's historical relationship with both France and Spain while maintaining full independence.
7. Constitution
Andorra adopted its modern Constitution on 14 March 1993, transforming the country into a fully sovereign democratic state. The Constitution established the separation of powers, guaranteed fundamental rights and freedoms, and confirmed Andorra's status as a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional co-principality. Although modern governance began in 1993, the country's co-principality system traces its origins to the Pareage Agreements of 1278, which settled disputes between French and Spanish rulers over the territory. Following the adoption of the Constitution, Andorra joined the United Nations in 1993, strengthening its position as an independent member of the international community.
8. Important Geographical Features
Andorra's landscape is dominated by the Pyrenees Mountains, giving the country rugged terrain, deep valleys, and scenic landscapes. Coma Pedrosa, standing at 2,946 metres, is the highest peak and a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. The Gran Valira River is the country's principal river, flowing through major valleys before entering Spain. The mountainous environment supports forests, alpine meadows, wildlife, and winter sports. Heavy snowfall during winter has made Andorra one of Europe's leading skiing destinations. These geographical features contribute significantly to tourism, which is the country's most important economic sector.
9. UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Madriu–Perafita–Claror Valley was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 and later extended in 2006. Covering nearly ten percent of Andorra's territory, the valley is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty and cultural landscape. It contains traditional stone houses, ancient farming systems, mountain pastures, forests, and glacial valleys that demonstrate sustainable human interaction with the environment over centuries. The site preserves Andorra's rural heritage and biodiversity while supporting conservation efforts. UNESCO recognized the valley for its exceptional cultural and environmental significance, making it one of Andorra's most valuable protected landscapes.

12. Did You Know?
One of the most unique facts about Andorra is that it has no permanent standing army. Under long-standing historical arrangements, France and Spain are responsible for assisting in the country's defence if necessary. Internal law and order are maintained by the Andorran Police Corps, which handles policing, border security, and public safety. This unusual defence system reflects Andorra's peaceful history and strong diplomatic relations with its neighbours. Despite lacking a regular military, Andorra remains a fully sovereign and internationally recognized nation. Its stability, neutrality, and cooperation with neighbouring countries have contributed to its peaceful development and prosperity.
