UNEP Limiting Overshoot Report: Warning on Crossing the 1.5°C Threshold
Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its Limiting Overshoot report on 2 September 2026. It warns that global warming is likely to cross 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within the next few years. The report stresses that crossing 1.5°C does not mean climate action has failed completely; the priority should now be to keep the overshoot as low and as short as possible and then bring temperatures down again.
