The Louvre Museum robbery of 19 October 2025 is one of the most audacious cultural thefts in modern European history. A highly organised group of four thieves, disguised as construction workers, infiltrated the Galerie d’Apollon—home to France’s Crown Jewels—at 9:30 a.m., just minutes after the museum opened to the public. Using a monte-meuble hoist from the Seine-side façade, the thieves accessed a first-floor balcony, cut through a glass window with a disc-cutter, and stole nine priceless jewellery pieces, including sapphires of Queens Maria Amalia and Hortense, emeralds of Empress Marie Louise, and pieces belonging to Empress Eugénie. The stolen artefacts, valued at €88 million, represent France’s royal heritage and carry immense cultural and historical significance.
The entire operation lasted under eight minutes, with four minutes spent inside the gallery—revealing deep operational planning. The thieves left behind tools including a disc cutter, blowtorch, gloves and walkie-talkie, aiding forensic teams in fingerprint and DNA analysis. The well-executed escape on motor scooters and selective targeting demonstrate high-level intelligence and prior reconnaissance.
