1. The Centre has tightened FCRA rules for NGOs. How should India balance national security and civil society freedom?
Answer: Both objectives are equally important in a constitutional democracy. The government has a legitimate responsibility to ensure that foreign funds are not misused for activities affecting national security or public order. At the same time, many NGOs make valuable contributions in education, healthcare, disaster relief and rural development. Excessive compliance requirements may unintentionally discourage genuine voluntary organisations. Therefore, regulation should focus on transparency and accountability without creating unnecessary administrative burdens. A mature democracy protects national interests while encouraging constructive civic participation. Strong governance depends on both accountable institutions and an active, responsible civil society.
