TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 86
1. The government called Telegram a “new dark web”. How should a democracy balance security and digital freedom?
Answer: A democracy must protect both security and liberty. If digital platforms are being used for cybercrime, fraud or examination leaks, the government has a responsibility to act. Therefore, the better approach is stronger cyber-investigation capacity, platform accountability and targeted enforcement. The real challenge is not choosing between security and freedom, but designing institutions that protect both. A mature democracy should seek balanced regulation rather than excessive control.
