TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 220
Q1. The World Bank has reported a major decline in extreme poverty in India. Does this mean India has successfully solved its poverty problem?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, the reported decline in extreme poverty is an important achievement, but it does not mean that poverty has disappeared. Poverty is not only about income. It also involves access to education, healthcare, nutrition, housing and stable employment. A family may cross the poverty line but remain vulnerable to illness, unemployment or rising prices. Regional inequality is another challenge because economic opportunities are not equally distributed. India should now focus on productive jobs, skill development and better public services. My view is that the real success of poverty reduction should be measured not only by how many people escape poverty, but also by how securely they remain outside it.
